Dear Parents, If your child is in my Accelerated class please be aware students MUST have 70% at the end of 1st Quarter, and a 75% at the end of 2nd Quarter, 1st Semester, 3rd Quarter, 4th Quarter, and 2nd Semester to remain in the Accelerated Math program. A large part of their grade is homework. Accelerated and Math 7 students can access
step by step solutions to all of the odd problems in their
textbook. Go to www.hotmath.com
, find the correct text book, and log in with west0708

CONTACTING ME
CONTACTING YOU Copy of Accelerated Math 7 Contract Dear Parents, Congratulations! Your son or daughter has been chosen as one of about 60 seventh grade students who will be taking accelerated math this year. Your son or daughter was placed in this class based on his/her math grades, standardized test scores, and teacher recommendations. This is a pre-algebra course. The year will hopefully provide for your student the perfect transition from arithmetic to algebra and geometry. The course this year covers a wide scope, including substantial amounts of arithmetic integrated with algebra. This is to assure that students will find themselves with enough prior knowledge to succeed in an algebra course next year. As an accelerated course, the material will be challenging. Students are expected to keep an organized notebook, take notes, participate in class lessons, and complete homework assignments. Grades are based on homework assignments, quizzes, tests, and projects. Students must have a 70% or better at the end of the first quarter to remain in this class. Students must have a 75% or better at the end of second quarter, first semester, third quarter, fourth quarter and second semester to remain in accelerated seventh grade math. Should a student find the material too difficult, and/or be able to maintain a C average, he/she can be transferred to a regular seventh grade math class at any time. Homework is one of the most important factors of this and any future course in accelerated mathematics. The homework will involve reviewing notes and examples done that day in class and then completing the assigned homework. A student coming unprepared to class the next day will miss out on the essence of the class activity for that day. Each student will be given one homework extension per chapter. If a student turns in all homework assignments and does not use his/her extension, he/she will receive 5 extra credit points. A typical class period might include grading and discussing the previous night’s homework with time given for any questions that may have come up at home. Then, notes on the next section are given in class and students are expected to write down important points and sample problems. Finally, the last few minutes of class are used to begin the assignment. At this time I can help students with individual questions or problems. The following supplies will be needed and used as soon as you can possibly attain them. Please check with your child to see that he/she has these items. Then it is very important that he/she brings them to class each and every day. (Except the protractor and compass, these are for home use.) Please engrave or paint (fingernail polish works best) your child’s last name on the calculator and cover. SUPPLIES Loose leaf paper (For assignments) 3 inch margin paper for notes Pencils (All assignments, test, and quizzes MUST be completed in pencil) Eraser Highlighter or Red Pen 12 inch ruler (with both inches and centimeters) Colored Pencils Scientific Calculator( Texas Instruments is best) PROTRACTOR AND COMPASS (For home use) PARENTS: § Be available to help at home if your child needs assistance. § Schedule a set time for homework each evening. § Check with your son/daughter to see that he/she has the supplies needed for the class. § Contact me as soon as a problem arises…don’t wait until it becomes a problem. Keep those lines of communication open! (My e-mail is best susan.kormylo@boiseschools.org ) § Encourage the student to seek help whenever necessary. I will strive for this school year to be a most challenging and successful year for all students. Sincerely, Susan Kormylo Mathematics Department West Junior High I HAVE READ THE ABOVE INFORMATION AND UNDERSTAND MY CHILD WILL BE PLACED IN THE REGULAR SEVENTH GRADE MATHEMATICS CLASS IF THEIR GRADE FALLS BELOW REQUIREMENTS ON THE FRONT OF THIS LETTER.
